Jo Raftery – 10th December 2009

Middle of December…wind, rain, coldness! Im thinking i must be crazy going for a photo shoot outdoors, but Neil had every confidence it was going to be perfect conditions for some awesome shots, him being the professional I thought ok lets give this thing a go!

We decided to do the first pictures on the sand dunes at Lytham St annes, as the lighting was perfect for these kind of pictures (though a little bright on my eyes!) but I squinted through! Having not really done this sort of thing before I was leaving everything with Neil, putting some of my input in as to what I would like to achieve and leaving it with him to find the best way possible to do this. This day was also a learning curve for Neil as previously he had only mainly photographed landscape and wildlife..and now he had a real person! How scarey ;-O At least I stayed still when he wanted me to!

We started doing a few shots sitting down on the dunes and Neil went over to another dune then snapped away (kind of made me feel better actually not having a camera directly in my face!) I think that shows on the shots aswell as I look more relaxed. These shots came out much better than I expected I have to say. Neil explained to me exactly how to sit, down to the way my hands were turned to make the best possible image.

After this we headed a little further down to some more dunes and took some shots infront of the pier standing and these pictures blew me away (yeh it was windy ;-/) but literally when I saw them I was very happy with the results. The lighting was perfect and everything about the pictures just seemed to have so much feeling to them and character. I would say some of the best shots of the day came from this shoot.

After the dunes we headed a little further down the promenade to Fair Haven Lake and took some shots there, by now I had changed and was dressed fully in black, we were going for a more darker look and planned on using black and white so thought black would be the best colour for these kind of shots. Lighting for Neil was tricky as I was half under cover and half exposed to natural light (see pictures) so it took sometime to get the lighting exactly right, but he got it..again :-) I love the darkness of these images and the contrast between light and dark on some of them.

Neil was a pleasure to work with, we listened to each other, I told him what I would like and he told me what he envisaged and together we came up with the perfect shots, and can hopefully say, both parties achieved the desired results.

So at the end of the day..the verdict was unaminous between myself and Neil…good job! Time to go home play around and see what we can do with our work..

Had an awesome day doing this (though the weather was ridicolous!) and cant wait for shoot number 2, I know Neil has lots of ideas already for a portfolio and I myself have some ideas I will have to throw his way :-)

Thanks Mr Spiers…your a legend! :-) x

I’ve known Neil since our School days and I adored this picture the moment I saw it. I contacted Neil straight away to see if I could have the image as it would be perfect for my Living Room and he was more than happy to arrange this for me.

The picture portrays our woodlands and countryside perfectly and you can almost hear the water babbling in the movement captured in the image. It reminds me of exploring woodlands when I was a child, our very funny school trip to Tower Wood near Windermere (happy days!) and orienteering aka getting lost! It also reminds me of many happy leisurely drives I have taken through the Lakes and the scenery you pass through. The different greens are amazingly beautiful as too are the hints of Autumn shades just starting to show through. I also love that the more you look at it the more detail you see. Beautiful shot and could even be mistaken for one taken by world famous photographer Peter Lik!
